What is static sift hash? The dry method, explained

Golden resin heads on a fine sifting screen

Static sift is hash made without water or solvents. Resin heads are sifted from dried flower through fine screens, then static electricity pulls the lighter plant matter away. What’s left is some of the cleanest dry hash there is.

In short

  • Static sift is dry sift hash, cleaned with static electricity.
  • It’s solventless: only screens and static, with no water and no heat.
  • The cleanest static sift can come close to full melt.

From trichome to golden head

Hash starts with trichomes, the tiny resin glands that cover a cannabis flower. Each gland has a stalk and a head, and the head holds most of the cannabinoids and terpenes. Separate enough heads from the plant and you have hash. The cleaner the separation, the better it tastes and melts.

That’s the idea behind our name: Golden Heads Warriors put the golden heads first.

How dry sifting works

Dry sifting is the oldest way to make hash. Dried, cured flower is gently worked over fine mesh screens. The brittle resin heads break off and fall through, while most of the plant material stays on top.

  • Cold and dry conditions help. Heads snap off cleanly when the resin is cold and the air isn’t humid.
  • The first pass is the cleanest. Later passes pull more plant matter, so sifters keep them separate.
  • Screen size matters. Stacked screens of different mesh sizes sort the heads by size, and each size gets collected on its own.

Where the static comes in

Even careful sifting lets some fine plant matter through: bits of leaf, stalks and broken trichomes. Static sift, also called static tech, cleans that out. A surface charged with static electricity is held just above a thin layer of dry sift. The lighter contaminants jump up to the charged surface, and the denser resin heads stay behind.

Pass after pass, the sift gets cleaner and more golden. The best static sift can come close to full melt, the top grade usually associated with ice water hash.

Static sift vs. ice water hash

Both are solventless. The difference is the medium.

  • Static sift is made dry, with screens and static. No water touches the resin, so there’s no drying step afterwards. It’s usually made from dried, cured flower, so it carries a cured flavor.
  • Ice water hash is washed off the plant with ice and water, sorted through micron bags and then dried. It’s often washed from fresh frozen plants for a live flavor.

Neither one is better across the board. Dry sift fans love its flavor and texture, bubble hash fans chase the melt, and plenty of people enjoy both. See every hash type compared.

How static sift is enjoyed

Static sift can be crumbled over a bowl or into a joint, or pressed into a small disc or ball. At the highest grades, it can be dabbed at low temperature. Pressed, it keeps its terpenes longer: see our guide to pressed hash, temple balls and piattella.

Quick answers

Is static sift the same as kief?

No. Kief is the loose resin that collects in a grinder or at the bottom of a sifting box, and it carries plenty of plant matter. Static sift takes that much further: it’s sifted and then cleaned with static until mostly heads are left.

Is static sift solventless?

Yes. It’s made with screens and static electricity only: no water, no solvents and no heat.

How should I store it?

Cool, dark, airtight and dry, ideally in a small glass jar. Here’s how to store hash of every kind.
