Hash is at its best when it’s fresh, and the things that age it are easy to beat: heat, light, air and moisture. Follow four simple rules and your hash will keep tasting the way it should.
In short
- Keep hash cool, dark, airtight and dry.
- Use small glass jars, and keep rosin in the fridge.
- Let cold jars warm up before opening them.
The four rules
- Cool. Heat softens resin, drives off terpenes and speeds up aging. Keep hash somewhere cool, and keep rosin in the fridge.
- Dark. Light, and sunlight above all, breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes. Use an opaque container or keep it in a drawer.
- Airtight. Oxygen slowly oxidizes resin and dulls the flavor. Use a small, well-sealed container with as little empty space as possible.
- Dry. Moisture invites mold, especially in loose sift and bubble hash. Only store hash that’s fully dry.
Storage by type
Static sift and dry sift
Keep it in a sealed glass jar, cool and dark. Loose sift has a lot of surface area, so it ages faster than pressed hash. More about static sift.
Ice water hash
Bubble hash doesn’t like warmth. Store it cold in glass, and keep full melt in the fridge or freezer if you won’t use it soon. More about ice water hash.
Pressed hash
Temple balls and pressed hash are made to age, so a sealed jar in a cool, dark place works well. Keep piattella cold. More about pressed hash.
Hash rosin
Keep rosin in a sealed glass jar in the fridge. Cold keeps its texture stable and its terpenes in the jar. More about hash rosin.
Fridge or freezer?
For hash you’ll use in the next few weeks, a cool drawer or the fridge is fine. For long-term storage, the freezer keeps things most stable. Either way, let the container come up to room temperature before you open it, so condensation doesn’t form on the hash.
What to avoid
- Plastic bags. Resin sticks to them, and they don’t keep air out for long.
- Big jars for small amounts. More air means more oxidation.
- Heat traps like hot cars, sunny windowsills and pockets.
- Opening cold jars straight away, which lets condensation form.
