Dry sift is resin knocked from dried, cured flower through a stack of fine screens, with no water and no solvents. The screens are measured in microns, which is the “73u” or “90u” you see on a label: the smaller the number, the finer the screen.
What is dry sift hash?
Dry sift hash is the oldest way of making hash, and still one of the purest. Dried, cured flower is worked gently over a stack of fine screens. The resin heads break free and fall through, while most of the plant matter stays on top. What collects underneath is dry sift: a powder that ranges from pale blond to deep gold, ready to smoke loose or press.
Screens, microns and grades
Screens are measured in microns, the "u" on a label. A stack runs from coarse to fine, and each screen catches heads of a certain size. Sift collected from the middle of the stack, often around 73 to 120 microns, usually holds the most mature heads and the least plant matter. Some sift is sold as a single micron; some is a blend such as "160/73u".
Dry sift, static sift and frozen sift
- Static sift is dry sift cleaned again with static electricity.
- Frozen sift is dry sift made from fresh frozen plants instead of cured flower.
- Filtered hash is sift passed through extra rounds of fine filters.
